Exceptions:
- Blood samples are not accepted if the patient has received an allogeneic bone marrow or stem cell transplant due to the presence of donor DNA. In these cases, cultured fibroblast DNA is required.
- Blood transfusions within the last two weeks may impact test results.
Volume:
- Collect blood in both tubes.
- Minimum: One EDTA (lavender top) tube containing a minimum of 3 mL of whole blood.
- Pediatric collection: 4-5 mL in a single tube is acceptable.
- Multiple tests can typically be run from a single 3 mL blood sample, but additional volume may be required for comprehensive testing.
Labeling:
Label each tube with:
- Patient's full name
- Patient's date of birth
- Sample collection date
Stability:
- Blood samples must be shipped the same day as collection.
- If same-day shipping is not possible, refrigerate at 2-8°C and ship within 24 hours.
Rejection Criteria:
Blood specimens will be rejected if:
- Frozen, hemolyzed, or clotted.
- The transport tube is unlabeled or missing patient identifiers.
Shipping:
- Ship overnight Monday - Thursday using the pre-labeled FedEx Clinical Pak provided.
- In warmer months, including a cold pack is recommended.
